As 2026 begins, families and providers across the state are being urged to protect childcare scholarship’s Michigan families rely on for stability, access, and opportunity. New federal protocols governing the release of childcare funds have introduced uncertainty, even as Michigan’s program continues to operate with integrity and accountability.

The federal government recently implemented new national requirements for accessing child care funds following allegations of waste, fraud, and abuse in another state. In response, the State of Michigan has taken steps to comply with these requirements to ensure continued support for childcare scholarship payments.

Importantly, there is no evidence of widespread fraud or abuse in Michigan’s childcare scholarship program. Michigan families and providers follow established rules, and the state verifies that funds are used appropriately to support children, working parents, and small businesses.

However, even the threat of funding freezes—combined with increased administrative requirements—creates instability. Working parents, child care providers, and employers all depend on reliable child care systems. Any disruption places strain on families, classrooms, and the broader workforce.

In November 2025 alone, 46,695 Michigan children participated in the child care scholarship program. These funds allow parents to work or attend school while ensuring children receive safe, high-quality care. Providers depend on timely payments to keep classrooms open, staff employed, and doors accessible to families.

At Spreading Childcare, we know firsthand how essential scholarship funding is to our families and our community. That is why we are asking families and child care professionals to speak up and help protect childcare scholarship Michigan children and families depend on.
